Facts about Irish

February 28, 2012

Dr. Reddick here…..

It’s March and that means St. Patrick’s Day.  Irish has imbedded itself into our country, customs and lives.  Here are some United States Irish Facts:

  • 34 million Americans have Irish ancestry
  • Some American towns have ’Irish’ names.  You could visit: Mount Gay-shamrock, West, Virginia; Shamrock Lakes, Indiana; Shamrock, Oklahoma; Shamrock, Texas; Dublin, California  and Dublin, Ohio.
  • The Irish flag is green, white and orange.  The green symbolizes the people of the south, and the orange, the people of the north.  White represents the peace that brings them together as a nation.
  • Legend says that each leaf of the clover means something:  the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck.
  • St. Patrick really didn’t drive the snakes out of Ireland, because there have never been snakes in Ireland.  It was a metaphor referring to the evil.
  • Dying the river green in Chicago started in 1962 by the parade organizer and head of the plumbers union, Steve Bailey.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Healthy Eating Tip 1

February 28, 2012

Dr. Reddick here….

Set yourself up for success

To set yourself up for success, think about planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps rather than one big drastic change. If you approach the changes gradually and with commitment, you will have a healthy diet sooner than you think.

  • Simplify. Instead of being overly concerned with counting calories or measuring portion sizes, think of your diet in terms of color, variety, and freshness. This way it should be easier to make healthy choices. Focus on finding foods you love and easy recipes that incorporate a few fresh ingredients. Gradually, your diet will become healthier and more delicious.
  • Start slow and make changes to your eating habits over time. Trying to make your diet healthy overnight isn’t realistic or smart. Changing everything at once usually leads to cheating or giving up on your new eating plan. Make small steps, like adding a salad (full of different color vegetables) to your diet once a day or switching from butter to olive oil when cooking.  As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices to your diet.

Every change you make to improve your diet matters. You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to completely eliminate foods you enjoy to have a healthy diet. The long term goal is to feel good, have more energy, and reduce the risk of cancer and disease. Don’t let your missteps derail you—every healthy food choice you make counts.

Sweet Potato Salad (from Dr. Tah)

3 medium sized sweet potatoes, cubed

1 hard-boiled egg, chopped

1 green apple, chopped with skin still on

5 strips of bacon, roughly chopped

Dressing

4 Tbsp olive oil

1 Tbsp chives, chopped

4 Tbsp mayonnaise

2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

1 Tbsp Dijon mustard

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

In a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the sweet potatoe cubes, fill with water and bring to a boil.  Cook until tender. Meanwhile, in a small skillet over a medium heat, fry the bacon until crispy. To hard boil the eggs, place them in a sauce pan covered with cold water.  Bring to a boil over a high heat and then reduce the heat and let simmer for 10 minutes, then drain the hot water and run some cold water over the eggs to rapidly stop them from cooking.  After the eggs are cool enough to handle, you can peel them and chop them.  In a small bowl, combine all the dressing ingredients. Mix thoroughly.  In a large bowl, combine the cooked potatoes, eggs, apple and bacon.  Top with the dressing.

A Series of Healthy Eating

January 31, 2012

Dr. Reddick here….

Healthy eating is not about strict nutrition philosophies, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, and keeping yourself as healthy as possible– all of which can be achieved by learning some nutrition basics and using them in a way that works for you.

Healthy eating begins with learning how to “eat smart”—it’s not just what you eat, but how you eat. Your food choices can reduce your risk of illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, as well as defend against depression. Additionally, learning the habits of healthy eating can boost your energy, sharpen your memory and stabilize your mood. You can expand your range of healthy food choices and learn how to plan ahead to create and maintain a satisfying, healthy diet.

Over the next several months, we will be including several tips to help you eat better and get healthy.  Along with those tips we will be providing recipes—new ones and those old standby’s with some healthier changes.  And all the recipes have been tried by the staff in our office.  So we know they are good.

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

1/3 cup rolled oatsOatmeal and fruit is a hearty and healthy meal.

2/3 cup water

1/2 of an apple, cut up

1/2 teas. cinnamon

Add all the ingredients to a small pot, bring to a boil then down to a simmer for 5-7 minutes.

 Sharon’s Variation:

I like to add the apples at the end of cooking so they are still crunchy and a dash of nutmeg.

Sometimes I add nuts, raisins, dates, bananas, berries, pears, pineapple or whatever I’m in the mood for or whatever is in the pantry.

Neurologic Relief Center is here

January 31, 2012

Dr. Reddick here….

When there have been physical or emotional traumas (stress), tension canThe meninges surround the nerves as they exit the spine. build up at the base of your skull and can pull on the meninges, which are not that flexible.  Meninges are attached to all the nerve roots that exit your spine.  When the meninges are pulled it could irritate those nerves.

NRC Technique (NRCT) releases the tension in the meninges thus releasing the irritation to the nerves.

When your nerves are irritated you may experience many symptoms because nerves control every function of your body.

The vast majority of health problems other than infectious diseases could be stress and neurological in nature.  Everyone should be tested to see if NRCT could help them.

NRCT is non-invasive and is usually painless.  We can perform a test to see how you respond to help determine if you are a candidate for NRCT>  Many people respond to the test with a percentage of their symptoms relieved for minutes or days.

The most common symptoms that respond to NRCT are pain, Fibromyalgia, arthritic like symptoms, numbness, headaches and Migraines, forgetfulness, burning, insomnia, sleeplessness, fatigue, irritability, digestive problems, nervousness, anxiousness, moodiness, etc.

Make an appointment today for you or a loved one.  Testing is always free.

Tips on How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

December 27, 2011

Dr. Reddick here…..

How many times have you started your  New Year’s Resolution only to give up by the end of January or before.  There are a couple of ways to attain that goal.

1. Choose a Realistic, Specific Goal—Don’t choose to ‘lose weight, or ‘eat better’, choose to ‘lose 10 lbs’ or ‘limit soda to 1 can a day.’

2. Pick only one resolution.  Then you can focus on that resolution only.

3. Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve.  Planning and research will increase your success dramatically.

4. Start with small steps.  Doing too much in the beginning will be overwhelming.  If you resolve to run a marathon, start going for a short jog 2 times a week.  If you want to eat healthier, start by replacing one or two junk food items with a healthier choice.

5. Avoid repeating past failures. Don’t make the same failing resolution year after year.  Change it a little or try something different.

6. Remember that any change is progress.

7. Don’t let small stumbles bring you down.  Your path to success will not be straight.  Expect to have some difficult days, but don’t waiver from your goal.

8. Get support.  Join a support group or tell your friends and family what your goal is so they can help you reach it.

Good luck with the Resolution.

Until next time….here’s to your complete wellness.

Auto Accident 101 Part 2

December 27, 2011

Dr. Reddick here…..

Unfortunately, even after a minor accident you’ll need to take a proactive role to make sure you get what you need and what you deserve.

We Can Help !

Whether it was a little incident in the parking lot, or two cars attempting to occupy the same space in an intersection, you need people on your side, willing to help. Here’s what you can expect from us:

1.  After completing some brief paperwork detailing the nature of your health problem you’ll meet with our chiropractor for a consultation.  Here, we get to know each other and see if you’re a good candidate for chiropractic care.

2.  If it seems like chiropractic care is likely to help, we’ll conduct a thorough examination. We’ll watch you turn and bend and conduct other tests that help reveal any restrictions to the normal movement of your spine. (Pictures of your spine may be necessary.)

3.  We’ll give you a complete report of our findings. We’ll explain what we found, what we can do to help, how long it may take and how much it will cost. You’ll have some choices and we’ll explain the pros and cons so you can make an informed decision.

4.  If you choose to proceed, we’ll begin a series of chiropractic adjustments designed to improve the biomechanics of your spine and reduce tension to your nervous system causing your most obvious symptoms. Those who want a natural solution that

addresses the underlying cause of their symptoms prefer this drug-free approach.

5.  From time to time we’ll conduct progress examinations. We use these brief exams to compare where you are, with where you were. The results help guide your visit schedule—increasing, reducing or keeping your visit frequency the same.

6. Although every case is different, there is a possibility that care may be

at no cost to you.

7.  We offer wellness care. Many who begin chiropractic care experience such profound results they opt to continue their care on a maintenance or preventive basis.

8.  While this is rarely covered by insurance companies, they see the value of continued care to support and optimize their health.

If you’ve been in a car accident, give us a call.  The longer you wait, scar tissue and muscle patterns get established that increase your recovery time. So, it’s important to act now. Not only can we offer relief, but we can give you suggestions that can help put this behind you once and for all.”

Until next time….here’s to your complete wellness.
